Abstract:

Long-term sustainability of space operations depends on internationally coordinated standards that support data integrity, operational safety, and responsible behavior in orbit. The UN COPUOS LTS guidelines identify numerous areas—such as orbital data sharing, conjunction assessment, reentry risk management, and space weather information—where standardized approaches are essential. ISO Technical Committee 20 and CCSDS develop complementary standards that address data exchange, operational norms, debris mitigation requirements, and downstream services. Key elements include structured data message formats, normative registries for terminology and reference frames, and comprehensive best-practice standards governing spacecraft design, operations, and disposal. Mapping of existing and emerging standards to LTS guideline needs shows broad but incomplete coverage, emphasizing the need for continued global participation in standards development. These activities collectively strengthen space safety, improve interoperability, and support sustainable growth of the space domain.
