Abstract:
This article provides an overview of and terminology associated with the topic of data fusion, especially as it relates to, and for the purposes of promoting space sustainability and enabling Space Traffic Coordination (STC) and Space Traffic Management (STM). First, the terminology and organizations (data contributors and aggregators) associated with data fusion is discussed. Next, the various “levels” of data fusion are delineated, and a detailed breakdown of the data levels associated with STC and STM (and indeed all space operations) is provided. The taxonomy of data required for safe collaborative space activities are detailed. And finally, data fusion is explored in the context of STC and STM, including the levels, techniques, data sources, and state representations used. And finally, the benefits and limitations of the various data fusion types and levels are outlined with practical examples provided.
